Parent's Guide to Big Brother

Big Brother (2000) is a long-running reality competition television series that isolates a group of contestants, known as houseguests, in a custom-built house under constant video surveillance. Cut off from the outside world, these individuals compete in various challenges, form alliances, and navigate complex social dynamics, with houseguests regularly evicted until a single winner remains. The show, which originated in the Netherlands, explores human behavior under extreme social pressure and observation. While ostensibly a game show, it often delves into interpersonal conflicts, relationships, and strategic maneuvering. Due to its unscripted nature and the adult interactions it captures, the series typically features mature themes, including suggestive content, strong language, and sometimes intense interpersonal drama, making it generally appropriate for older teenage and adult audiences.

Things to Consider

High3

Romance and Sexual Content

Early seasons were noted for being 'raunchy,' featuring provocative competitions with partial nudity, implied sexual activity, and 'nude shots' on unedited feeds. Hookups and romantic relationships are common, including kissing and 'girl-on-girl kissing' shown in broadcasts, and more explicit intimate sessions on live feeds.

Earlier seasons of Big Brother (before BB16 in the US) were described as 'a bit raunchy'. Competitions could be 'very provocative,' involving houseguests undressing and swapping bathing suits in slime, or undressing to spell words, with contestants able to 'see under the wall and look at each other'. 'Nude shots' aired on Big Brother After Dark on Showtime 2. Evel Dick shouted 'I see boobies' during a competition where houseguests were undressing. Instances of 'inappropriate touching' by houseguests, such as JC Mounduix attempting to use an ice cream scooper under blankets or cupping genitals, were addressed by CBS. Kissing, make-out sessions, 'girl-on-girl kissing,' and 'naked pool parties' are mentioned as features, with hookups being 'normal' and intimate sessions filmed and aired, especially on 'hard-core fans' feeds. Revealing bikinis and low-cut outfits are frequently worn.

Profanity

The show features frequent strong language, with much of it bleeped in edited broadcasts. However, some milder profanity and misuses of God's name are unbleeped, and uncut versions (like 'Big Brother After Dark' and live feeds) contain uncensored explicit language.

Disrespect & Rebellion

Disrespectful behavior, including arguments, 'wallowing, whining, plotting and lying,' and racially insensitive or offensive comments, are frequently observed. Contestants sometimes defy rules or display rebellious attitudes, leading to warnings or ejections from the 'Big Brother' production.

Additional Context

Best For Ages

TV-14. The official rating for Big Brother US is TV-14. Content includes suggestive sexual themes, some nudity (especially in unedited feeds), strong language, intense interpersonal conflict, and occasional instances of violence or threats, making it generally suitable for audiences aged 14 and older.

Good to Know

Parents should be aware that while the edited CBS broadcasts of Big Brother are rated TV-14, the 'live feeds' and 'Big Brother After Dark' (which airs on other networks like Showtime 2 for uncensored content) contain more explicit material, including unbleeped profanity, full nudity, and more graphic sexual discussions or implied acts. The nature of reality television also means that content can be unpredictable and may include intense arguments, social manipulation, and potentially offensive language or behavior not fully captured or censored in the main broadcast.
