Parent's Guide to Midsommar

Midsommar (2019) is a folk horror film, also categorized as a psychological thriller, directed by Ari Aster. The story follows Dani, a young woman grappling with profound grief after a family tragedy, who reluctantly accompanies her emotionally distant boyfriend, Christian, and his friends on a trip to a remote Swedish commune for a fabled midsummer festival. What begins as an idyllic, flower-adorned retreat quickly descends into a disturbing and increasingly violent series of pagan rituals. The film is known for its unsettling atmosphere, much of which unfolds in broad daylight, and its exploration of themes like grief, toxic relationships, and the search for belonging within a cultic community. Due to its intense and graphic content, the movie is strictly intended for mature adult audiences.

Things to Consider

High7

Violence

The film contains extreme and graphic violence, often depicted in explicit and lingering detail, including ritualistic murders, mutilation, and suicides. The violence is a central and disturbing element of the plot.

Early in the film, Dani's sister commits murder-suicide via carbon monoxide poisoning, with the aftermath showing her corpse with a duct-taped tube over her mouth and visible vomit, eyes wide open. Later, two Hårga elders commit ritual suicide by jumping off a cliff; one dies on impact with her face rendered 'jagged bone shards and mush,' while the other survives the fall with broken legs and is then bludgeoned to death with a large mallet, shown graphically. Christian is eventually subjected to a 'blood eagle' ritual where his lungs are pulled out through his back, and he is later burned alive inside a bear carcass as a sacrifice.

Romance and Sexual Content

Midsommar features strong and graphic sexual content, including prolonged scenes of full-frontal nudity (male and female) and an explicit ritualistic sex scene. Themes of infidelity, emotional abuse, and sexual manipulation are central to the narrative.

Profanity

The movie contains frequent and strong profanity, including numerous obscenities, profanities, and sexual expletives used throughout the dialogue.

Witchcraft & Occult

Witchcraft and occult practices are central to the entire narrative, as the main characters are drawn into a pagan cult with deeply rooted rituals. These include elaborate ceremonies, human sacrifice, symbolic magic, and the use of runes and drawings for spells. The film's worldview is entirely pagan and pre-Christian.

Substance Use

Substance use is pervasive and critical to the plot, featuring frequent depiction of hallucinogenic drugs (mushrooms, drugged teas) consumed by characters, often unknowingly or under pressure. The effects of these drugs, including intense hallucinations and altered psychological states, are visually represented and are integral to the commune's rituals. Alcohol and smoking are also present.

Scary & Intense Content

The film is intensely scary and disturbing, characterized by pervasive psychological horror, grisly imagery, ritualistic violence, and a relentlessly unsettling atmosphere. It opens with a shocking family tragedy and escalates into extreme dread, often amplified by unfolding in bright daylight rather than darkness.

Anti-Christian Themes

The film is overtly pagan and features themes that are directly contrary to Christian beliefs. The central antagonists are a pagan cult whose practices involve human sacrifice and the veneration of nature deities through rituals that include the desecration of symbols that could be interpreted as Christian.

Additional Context

Best For Ages

Adults 18+ (R-rated). Midsommar is rated R by the MPAA for disturbing ritualistic violence and grisly images, strong sexual content, graphic nudity, pervasive drug use, and strong language. Parental reviews consistently advise against viewing for anyone under 18, with many suggesting even some adults will find the content profoundly unsettling and genuinely upsetting.

Good to Know

The film has a theatrical runtime of 140-148 minutes, but a Director's Cut adds approximately 23-30 minutes, extending the runtime to 171 minutes. The Director's Cut primarily deepens character development, particularly Dani and Christian's toxic relationship, and expands upon some of the Hårga rituals, but does not introduce new categories of concerns or significantly alter the intensity of existing ones.
